Hi Aaron,
Well I tweeted as "My blog about all these free services... http://tinyurl.com/yfy2sh8" and someone said it came back as a spam page. So I clicked on the link yesterday and it looked like it took me to a non-existent page on ZooLoo - said the page had been moved or something.

I figured maybe I didn't have permissions set up correctly for the blog, but when I click on the same link today, it works fine! TinyURL or ZooLoo??

Hi Fiona - I'm Aaron and I work at ZooLoo. We saw your blog post today and really appreciate you checking out the site.

You mentioned your friend said the blog "came back as a spammy page." Would you mind telling us a little more about what that means? Since we're still in beta, we're trying to fix things like that.

Have a good one

Fiona,

I think your ideas are VERY well taken and have a TON of merit.

And, it IS interesting how this is, I feel, all a matter of "levels of comfort". That is, a few SHORT years ago, I'll bet ALL of us were a bit 'skeptical' of on-line ANYTHING, then, as time passed and we became more comfortable, we started using it until now, we can't imagine visiting 'Brick and Mortar' for some of our items any more. I think the idea of our phones/browsers learning more about us is more of the same. Sure there will some who are just NOT going to do it; but I'll BET as time goes on, we will be AMAZED at the amount of info we are allowing to be 'scanned' off of us. Just look at FaceBook/Twitter etc. We can learn MORE intimate details from people to the point that our passwords can be 'hacked' based on info that WE put 'out there' (see Sarah Palen's lesson).

So, I think it is just a matter of time and convience that will 'drive' us to, more and more, 'blurring' of the "personal info is personal" line.

Just my 1.5 cents worth.

By the way, I am NOT giving out my SSN!!!!! :-D

Fiona

First off... welcome to the Information/Data Quality blogging community.

Your post very neatly sums up the key challenge in Information Quality... communicating what the expectations are that need to be met. You also nicely touch on the "front-end fixation" that seems to afflict software projects.

It is exactly these kind of challenges that the IAIDQ (International Association for Information & Data Quality) tries to help people understand and solve in their professional lives.

I couldn't agree more with you that an information/data quality team needs to be cross-functional with people from both IT and the Business side onboard working towards a clear and common goal. Far to often that is not the case and people wonder why the quality doesn't improve.

One key benefit that IT get from better quality data and a better understanding across the business and IT divide (of eis that they get fewer trivial support calls and a lot less "life is not like Star Trek" requirements into system releases. Also, they can avoid the inevitable blame game when the flashy front-end system falls over due to duff data in the processes.

That is where the DQ professional has to educate management so that any new data quality initiative consists of a team with members from both departments. Additionally, to ensure that both depts are paying attention, you need to make sure that the ultimate benefits for them are made clear. Marketing will get better, more accurate data. What benefit does IT get? Depends on the company - involvement might be enough for some, reduced user whining may be good for another!

I couldnt agree more that communication is imperative to the success of any project like you've mentioned. How though do we educated businesses to realise that departments such as IT and Marketing need to talk more and that both should be involved in these projects from the beginning. From my own experience i know just how different these departments are - both seem to have more important things to do than spend time with each other??
